Do you ever notice that when someone is telling us a story, we instantly respond with advice. Whether it was solicited or not.
It's a natural reflex.

Sometimes people just want to be heard.
Our part is to be present, and listen - advice should only be furnished upon request.
(This is definitely one of my new years resolutions.)
